Siegert began his career as a filmmaker in the 1990s, after he had previously completed studies in history, art history and theatre and had worked as a graduate landscape architect. Early in his career, he worked in various areas of film production, including production management, sound design and editing.
In 1996 he founded the production company S.U.M.O. Film, which in the following years he produced successful cinema documentaries such as the architecture big city classic Berlin Babylon (2001), that premiered in the official selection of the Berlin Filmfestival, opening film Panorama; the coming-of-age duo: KLASSENLEBEN (2005) and DIE KINDER DER UTOPIE (2019); the Max Ophüls Award-winning: BEYOND PUNISHMENT (2015) on restorative justice.
In collaboration with director Götz Schauder, Siegert produced feature documentary CONDUCT! EVERY MOVEMENT COUNTS (2016), on the George Solti Competition for young conductors. Here Siegert took on the role of producer-only for the first time.
From 2007 onwards Siegert was involved in the newly founded German Film Academy (Deutsche Filmakademie) for the documentary film branch and was a board member from 2009 to 2017. In 2017-22 he was appointed to the BKM's film funding jury for documentary film.
In 2020 he founded the production company spicefilm GmbH for the development and production of A GERMAN PARTY, director Simon Brückner's direct cinema documentary of the German, far right political party AfD, that premiered 2022 in the official selection of the Berlin Filmfestival, Berlinale Special.
With director Götz Schauder he developed FATHER, SON, RESISTANCE, produced by S.U.M.O. Film with ZDF/3sat, on an artist family in former communist Germany under the pressure of the secret service. "A GERMAN PARTY" is a documentary about a new since 2010th successful far-right political party in Germany. Siegert produced the film, while Simon Brückner directed it. It provides a historical look at the party, its internal power struggles, and ideological conflicts - shot and edited in the classic style of Direct Cinema. The film premiered at the 2022 Berlinale and Vision du Reel at Nyon, was broadcast on 3Sat TV and is available in their media library, as well as on several streaming platforms.
