“A conductor has to be a personality, has to have a personal charisma. This is the only way he can transfer what he feels to the orchestra.”
Karl Rarichs, Founder of the Conductors' competion named after Sir Georg Solti
Five young conductors from different countries, united by a great goal and at the same time competitors: to win the International Sir Georg Solti Conducting Competition. They work with Frankfurt's best orchestras and are judged by a high-calibre jury. Whoever wins the final at the Alte Oper after three exciting qualifying rounds will have the door to an international career wide open. The film is told from the perspective of the young conductors, showing their striving for artistic recognition and getting closer to the secret of conducting. A film that focuses on the interaction between conductor and orchestra - and illuminates this relationship in a completely new way.
“That's what fascinates me: When a conductor can create an incredibly delicate fragrance that you think you can smell, even though it's purely imaginary, of course. These are atmospheric things that a good conductor can create. And that is very far removed from the pure 1,2,3,4 beat.”
Ludwig Hampe, viola leader in the Frankfurt Opera and Museum Orchestra
Götz Schauder, director of the film CONDUCT! EVERY MOVE COUNTS!, worked on Hubertus Siegert's film BEYOND PUNISHMENT as a researcher and assistant director. At the same time, he shot the George Solti Conducting Competition 2015 on his own initiative. Schauder's material impressed Hubertus Siegert, who ultimately decided to produce the resulting film and provided dramaturgic support.
World premiere: Lichterfilmfest Frankfurt 2016
German cinema release (Mindjazz): 2016
Arte and NHK: 2017

Jury
Aziz Shokhakimo
„Thanks to precise observations with the camera and unembellished comments by the musicians, "Conduct! - Every Move Counts!" documents the interplay between conductor and orchestra with great authenticity. A multi-layered drama about competition and friendship, talent and maturity, successes and defeats unfolds.“
MUSIK HEUTE
„Exciting insights into the world of alpha females and males with the baton in their hands and a little insight into the absurdity of competitions...highly recommended!“
Deutschlandfunk „Corso“
„Götz Schauder ... visualises how differently they conduct, shape and convey the same notes. And what a brutal metier they have chosen for themselves. In the end, only one of them is allowed to set the pace.“
Süddeutsche Zeitung
„With "Conductors Every Move Counts!", the director has succeeded in making a very unusual film. It can be just as appealing to someone who has been interested in classical music for a long time as it is to someone who has no connection with it. Worth seeing."
Frankfurter Neue Presse
“Captivating, psychologically finely tuned documentary about a woman and four men who take part in a major conducting competition. After watching this sensitive film, even a musical layman will have more than just an idea of what it might feel like.”
Filmstarts
“The film conveys a vivid picture of the highly complex communication that takes place in and through orchestral music. And which, when it takes hold of us, we understand without having to put it into words.”
Jury der Evangelischen Filmarbeit
„The exciting thing about this documentary is not the rocky road to winning the competition - but what happens here in human terms. And how you deal with it.“
BR Klassik
„Götz Schauder's empathetic cinematic observation is closer to the musicians, the jury and the secret of conducting than almost any other film before it.“
